Latex - Fashion Forecast by Sol Watle

Over the last few years Latex has begun to make a definite transition away from fetish and full on into fashion. Designers have started to use this incredible material in creative, elegant, and delicate forms in their collections and as a result it has started to shake off its previous connotations of being solely linked to fetish apparel.

The VPL Autumn Winter 2011 collection included wrapped and architecturally shaped pieces combined with a clever use of different textures. Latex had been mixed in amongst the nylon, wools, leather, rubber and elastics and was used to make trench coats, leggings, bras and bodysuits as well as to finely coat chain necklaces.

Nicola Formichetti newly appointed creative director at Thierry Mugler used latex, leather, plastic and mesh in his debut collection for the label. Latex and leather trousers were teamed with sophisticated tailored jackets in black, peach, blue, nudes and white teamed with an array of the highest platforms to hit the catwalk.

We are always unconsciously wanting to come back. It is one of man’s strongest desires.
(Yohji Yamamoto)

The realization of a journey back to the wildness in which Yamamoto presents this Autunm-Winter /11 his collection with voluminous and exaggerated silhouettes. Inspired by the nature of escape, he enhances the garments with prints and patches, spelling out comfort with hooded ponchos, elaborate cut-away dresses, pleated skirts, wool puffer shrugs and oversized wide-leg pants. In the center of the collection’s theme we can find tones of black, olive and red.
